The High Priestess: the Light of the Quest

Some magic is born into this world because of how it is perceived. An herb may have power based on its nature, but it may also become powerful by virtue of how it is sought and collected. If enough mystique surrounds the acquisition of something, that mystique has the power to produce magic by virtue of the wonder and trepidation it inspires. This is why many magicians keep secrets; they can draw strength not only from the Light within a piece of secret knowledge, but also from the very act of keeping a secret and making it difficult to find.

This is represented in the Trumps by the High Priestess, she who keeps the gateway through the veil of Mystery. A Mystery is something one cannot understand unless one experiences it; it cannot be expressed or explained to any who have not also experienced the Mystery. A sorcerer can claim this magic by making her actions wondrous and strange, eccentric even to the point of being confusing. She can wield the force of curiosity and confusion as a force which baffles and contradicts. The mists of the realm of Faery, the strangeness of the inexplicable, are a power to wield, and a force which Initiates all it touches.

The Priestess counsels without explaining, and those who seek her power do the same. One does not need to make sense. One must simply follow the path and experience what is there. Logic, after all, isn’t always truth, and not all truths can be unraveled by thinking. We find echoes of this in the words of Herman Slater and Ed Buczynski, who founded Earth Religion News: “Guard the Mysteries. Reveal them Constantly.”[5] The paradox of this statement is an affirmation of the High Priestess’ wisdom: never explain, but reveal. Deepen the magic. Do not cheapen it.
